May 2017 - Stick - Graffiti Artist
During the month of May local Graffiti artist Stick was commissioned to paint the large grey wall in the Timber Playground area between Upper School and Hillside. Since the music classes look out to this wall, we decided that the piece should have a musical theme. Stick’s design has been inspired and includes imagery created by the 9th Grade visual arts students. Stick created a FantaStick Landscape
Stick spoke about his work to several groups of students across the school - Grade 3 even went back to the classroom to create their own work influenced by the visit.
Please see images and a video below.

The 9th grader art students at ISL started off the year with a music-inspired art project which lead to many outcomes. After going to on a field trip to the Pompidou Metz to see the MusiCircus exhibition, we had to find a song and basically paint a non-figurative piece to convey the emotions and sentiments which we felt while listening to the music. Playing around with painting techniques and using the basic art principles, we all produced abstract pieces, each with a different universe painted onto it. From the paintings, we crafted sculptures using foam-core (a type of easily malleable board), which had to be linked to back to our paintings. All of this project was a great way to introduce us 9th graders to all the art principles (movement, balance, colours, etc.) and to help us explore and take advantage of the materials around us too.
After the spring break, ISL had the graffiti artist Stick come and fill one of the outer walls of the school with graffiti, which had many features from our paintings. Apart from looking great and being eye-catching, the graffiti reminded us 9th grade students that there are endless ways to create art, and that one idea always leads to another.
